The Michigan History Museum opened in March 1989 as a constituent element of the Michigan Library and Historical Center. The LDS Church kept 797 of the objects in their Salt Lake City Museum. In 2003, they gave them to the Michigan History Museum in Lansing where they currently reside. The founder of the university's collection of artifacts was Francis Kelsey, a professor of Latin at the University of Michigan from 1889 until his death in 1927. [3] [4] Kelsey began acquiring artifacts in 1893 in order to help his students understand the ancient world. [5]
