VIA's original logo, used until 2014. VIA was created in 1977 when the citizens of Bexar County voted in favor of a one-half cent sales tax to fund the service. Subsequently, VIA purchased transit assets from the City of San Antonio and began operations in March 1978, taking its name from the Latin word for "road".

It is a suburb of San Antonio to the northeast, and is adjacent to Randolph Air Force Base. The city also borders Schertz, Texas to its east, Selma to its north, Live Oak to its west, and Converse to its southwest. The population was 19,720 at the 2020 census. It is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area.

It is centered on the city of San Antonio, the second largest city in Texas, second largest city in the Southern United States, [6] and the seventh largest city in the USA, with roughly 1.5 million residents spread across approximately 500 square miles.
The Schertz and Cibolo School Districts combined in the 1930s. On April 24, 1961, the school system became an independent school district. [1] In 1966, the community served by the Lower Valley School voted to consolidate with the Schertz-Cibolo system. [8] In 1967, Universal City was added to the name. [1]

Today, Converse is a prime example of wealthy, Black suburbs in the U.S. [ 7 ] In 1990, the community had a population of 8,887, and in 1991 it had seventy-three businesses.
