State Route 171 (SR 171) is an American 73.355-mile (118.053 km) state highway that serves as a north-south connection between Northport and Hamilton through Fayette, Marion and Tuscaloosa Counties. SR 171 intersects US 43 at its southern terminus and US 43/ US 278 / SR 17 at its northern terminus.
For approximately 130 miles (210 km), more than half its distance within the state, I-20 is concurrent with I-59 from the Mississippi state line to eastern Birmingham near Birmingham–Shuttlesworth International Airport. Mileage and exits on the concurrency are I-59's, although both highways have the same mileage for the Alabama concurrency.
This northern bypass of the urban area, if completed, would give Birmingham and Jefferson County a completely ringed Interstate bypass. I-65, I-59, and I-459 are expected to be widened or reconstructed to accommodate the increase in traffic that will come from the construction of I-422.
