Haast Pass / Tioripatea is a mountain pass in the Southern Alps of the South Island of New Zealand. Māori used the pass in pre-European times. The pass takes its name from Julius von Haast , a 19th-century explorer who also served as provincial geologist for the provincial government of Canterbury .
A Kāti Māmoe settlement at the site of modern Wānaka was named Para karehu. [7]The area was invaded by the Ngāi Tahu in the early 18th century. [7] Ngāi Tahu visited annually, seeking greenstone in the mountains above the Haast River and hunting eels and birds over summer, then returning to the east coast by descending the Clutha River in reed boats called mōkihi.
The headwaters are in Mount Aspiring National Park, on the eastern flanks of the Southern Alps near Haast Pass, which is the saddle between the Makarora and Haast River valleys. The Makarora River flows south into the northern end of Lake Wānaka after passing the small community of Makarora.
State Highway 6 (SH 6) is a major New Zealand state highway.It extends from the Marlborough region in the northeastern corner of the South Island across the top of the island, then down the length of the island, initially along the West Coast and then across the Southern Alps through inland Otago and finally across the Southland Plains to the island's south coast.
For Māori, the Wānaka and Hāwea area was a natural crossroads. The Haast Pass led to the West Coast and its pounamu; the Cardrona Valley led to the natural rock bridge "Whatatorere" which was the only place that the Kawarau River and Clutha River / Mata-Au could be crossed without boats. [1]
The town was renamed "Pembroke" within a month of the surveyor returning his books to Dunedin. It reverted to "Wanaka" on 1 September 1940, to reduce confusion between the names of the town and the lake. [21] The official name of the lake was updated from "Lake Wanaka" to "Lake Wānaka" in 2019, [2] and the town's name to "Wānaka" in 2021. [22]

The Gates of Haast is a gorge on the Haast River in Mount Aspiring National Park in the South Island of New Zealand. It is located 56 kilometres (35 mi) inland by road from the township of Haast and 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) from the summit of Haast Pass. The Gates of Haast has sheer rock cliffs above a steep cascade in the Haast River. [1]
