Abutilon theophrasti, also known as Velvetleaf, Velvet Plant, Velvetweed and the Chinese jute [1] is an annual plant in the family Malvaceae that is native to southern Asia and it serves as a type species of the genus Abutilon. [2] Its specific epithet, theophrasti, commemorates the ancient Greek botanist-philosopher Theophrastus. [3]
Jute fibers, composed primarily of cellulose and lignin, are collected from bast (the phloem of the plant, sometimes called the "skin") of plants like kenaf, industrial hemp, flax , and ramie. The industrial term for jute fiber is raw jute. The fibers are off-white to brown and range from 1–4 meters (3.3–13.1 ft) long.
The flowers sit on the end of a short stem, count 5 sepals, 5 petals and 10 free and yellow stamina. The fruit is spindle-shaped, dehiscent and divided into transversal sections through five valves. The fruit measures 2 to 8 cm in length and colors vary from greyish-blue to green or brownish-black.
