Tau Beta Sigma was founded at Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) by Wava Banes (Turner Henry). [1] Due to corporation laws in the state of Texas at the time, however, the Texas Tech sisters surrendered their name, ritual, jewelry, constitution and Alpha chapter designation in January 1946 to the local band sorority at Oklahoma State University. [1]
In 1947, Kappa Kappa Psi created its first National Intercollegiate Band, a band composed of musicians from universities across the United States.Since 1953, the national chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma have commissioned a new work for wind band to be premiered at the National Intercollegiate Band concert.
At Texas Tech, a local sorority for women in the band was established as Tau Beta Sigma. The women of Tau Beta Sigma petitioned Kappa Kappa Psi to be chartered as an auxiliary chapter of the fraternity, which was supported by founder A. Frank Martin, who was serving as National Executive Secretary, and Max Mitchell, Grand Second Vice President.
Beta Sigma Tau merged into Pi Lambda Phi on November 1, 1960. [2] Two chapters reverted to local status, and later joined other national fraternities. [6] An unrelated local group, Beta Sigma Tau (local) at the University of Toledo, was formed in 1996, influenced by the ideals of the original fraternity. [8]

While teaching she ceased to be involved with the activities of Tau Beta Sigma, although she attended the 1971 National Convention, and continued to attend conventions until her death. [2] On March 1 1981 she married Reese Henry in Aspen, Colorado, [1] adopting the name Wava Banes Henry. [2]
