[1] Most schools are large urban schools based in the city of Christchurch itself, including some of the largest in the country, with several small rural primary schools and a combined primary/secondary school on Banks Peninsula.
Medbury School was established in 1923 by the Chennells family after purchasing a property of 20,000 square metres (220,000 sq ft) and a large family home called "Ripsford". The school began with only nine boys cared for by the Chennells. By 1925 the number of boys attending the school had grown to approximately 50.
Unique amongst Christchurch schools as well as New Zealand primary schools, Cathedral Grammar provides single sex education to both boys and girls on the same grounds with the Girls' School opening in 1995. The school is divided into four departments. The preschool is co-ed, taking boys and girls from ages three to four.
