The Bangkok–Nong Khai high-speed railway or Northeastern high-speed rail line is a high-speed railway under construction in Thailand. It will be the first high-speed line in Thailand. It will be constructed in multiple phases; the first phase, between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima, is expected to open in 2026 after multiple delays. [2]
The estimated cost of the Nong Khai–Thanaleng line was US$6.2 million, of which 70% was financed by Thai loans. [5] Construction formally began on 19 January 2007, [7] and test trains began running on 4 July 2008. [6] Formal inauguration occurred on 5 March 2009. [8]
Train services are operated by the State Railway of Thailand drivers until Nong Khai, before the train is operated by Lao National Railway drivers to the station. The service utilizes former JR-West rolling stock for sleeper and second-class trains, being the only regularly scheduled train to use this stock in Thailand.
From 2009 to 2024, a shuttle train ran twice a day between Nong Khai railway station and Thanaleng station, [11] [12] with occasional services by the Eastern and Oriental Express. This rail link expanded closer to Vientiane city, with services to the new Khamsavath railway station in Vientiane Prefecture. [13]

However, the Vientiane end of the line will eventually cross the Mekong River on a new bridge to meet up with the Bangkok–Nong Khai high-speed railway once it is completed, making the connection. Freight transport by train between Nong Khai and Laos were increased to 24 round trips a day over the next five years, with each service consisting of 25 carriages, to handle growing cargo traffic from the rail link from standard gauge Boten–Vientiane railway, which opened in December 2021.
