In 1977, House Bill 803, Chapter 77-165 in the Laws of Florida, was passed in the Florida Legislature. This transportation policy act eliminated the State Highway Secondary System which consisted of county roads that were maintained by the state. County Road 490A is a suffixed alternate route of CR 490. It runs west to east as West Halls River Road from the Homosassa River in Homosassa to US 19–98–CR 490 in Homosassa Springs.
