Winnie-the-Pooh, or Pooh for short (voiced by Sterling Holloway (1965–1977) Hal Smith (1979–1989) and Jim Cummings (1988–present)), is an anthropomorphic, soft-voiced bear. Despite being naïve and slow-witted, he is a friendly, thoughtful and sometimes insightful character who is always willing to help his friends and try his best.
Western Publishing began publishing Winnie the Pooh as a quarterly comic book in January 1977, and published 33 issues, the last released in 1984. This book predated the Winnie the Pooh comic strip by a year and a half, but Sir Brian and the Dragon—introduced in the strip in June 1978—began appearing in the comic book with issue #14 (Aug 1979).
He began his career at The Walt Disney Company. His first role was the voice of Roo for 'Winnie the Pooh: Seasons of Giving, and he continued his voice work as Roo in The Tigger Movie, Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse, Piglet's Big Movie, and Pooh's Heffalump Movie, as well as in the television and video puppet series The Book of Pooh (2001–2003).
Unlike the previous Winnie the Pooh direct-to-video films A Very Merry Pooh Year and Seasons of Giving, Springtime with Roo does not reuse any episodes from The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Kanga and Roo are the only pair of animals of the same species in the books, and their close relationship is emphasized by the combination of their names ("Kanga-Roo"). The maternal instinct, in addition to Kanga's desire to always keep Roo close to her, in her pouch , is also evident in Kanga's willingness to adopt the newly arrived Tigger .
