Texas State Highway 174 begins at I-35W in the northern part of Burleson and runs southwest 15 miles (24 km) to Cleburne, the Johnson county seat. As of 2010, Burleson had a total area of 26.07 square miles (67.52 km 2 ), of which 26.01 square miles (67.36 km 2 ) were land and 0.07 square miles (0.17 km 2 ), or 0.25%, were water. [ 3 ]

Cross Timber is located in northern Johnson County 4 miles (6 km) south of the center of Burleson, 12 miles (19 km) north of Cleburne, the Johnson county seat, and 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Fort Worth. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.41 square miles (3.65 km 2), all land. [4]
In 1856, the county seat was moved to Buchanan and a new courthouse was built, which survived until at least the mid-1860s. A two-story framed courthouse was planned but never constructed. When part of Johnson County was consolidated into Hood County the county seat was moved again, to "Camp Henderson" which was renamed Cleburne.
