This forest ecosystem is a subtype of the general Afromontane forest, which can be found across Africa as far north as Ethiopia.However, it is distinguished from other types of forests in Southern Africa by its relatively distinct range of species and its being confined to the far south-western tip of Africa – separated from the other forested areas to the east and north.

Afromontane rain forest is found on wetter slopes from southern Ethiopia to Malawi, mostly between 1200 and 2500 meters elevation. It occurs on wetter slopes where average annual rainfall is from 1250 to 2500 mm, or higher.

Eastern forests cover about 384 million acres (1,550,000 km 2) and are predominantly broadleaf (74%), with the exception of extensive coniferous forests and plantations in the southern coastal region.
