The company opened its first store in 1991 in Newington, Connecticut and is ranked 12th in sales among United States furniture stores according to Furniture Today's list of Top 100 Furniture Stores. [4] [5] As of March 2022, the company has 150 stores in 24 US states, primarily in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and West Coast regions.
The company was founded in 1920 by Sam and Jessie Levin in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania as a general sales clearance center. [1] In the 1940s, the Levin family phased out other items in order to concentrate on furniture. Leonard Levin, son of Sam and Jessie, joined the company during this time and eventually became president.
It never holds sales, but sells its products all year round. [9] Sofa.com has appeared twice in the Sunday Times Fast Track 100, a list of the fastest-growing private companies in the UK, first in 2011 [10] and again in 2012. [11] Sofa.com sales grew from £572,000 in 2007 to £13.0m in the year ending February 2012.
