To upload images to Commons you can use the Commons Upload Wizard tool, which will guide you through the process. There is an important caveat: Commons only accepts freely licensed images. This means that you cannot upload most images found on the internet, as the vast majority of them are not free.
The /sandbox may not have the latest version of the template code in it, so before you make a change, you need to synchronize it with the main template. To get there, type "Template:foo" in the search box (see search), or make a wikilink like [[Template:foo]] somewhere, such as in the sandbox, and click on it. Once you are there, just click "edit" or "edit this page" at the very top of the page (not the documentation edit button lower down) and edit it in the same way that you would any other page.
