The 2019 science fiction novella Sisters of the Vast Black features a fictional group of nuns known as the Order of Saint Rita. St. Rita's Church is located in Nanthirickal, Kollam district, in the state of Kerala, India. It is the only church in Asia to have relics of Saint Rita. It is the only Catholic church in Kerala named after St. Rita.
In 1951, St. Joseph's became a mission of Saint Rita's in nearby Maple City. Saint Joseph's was used by the Catholic congregation until 1970, when the Saint Joseph parish was merged with Staint Rita's. St. Rita's Church is a parish church governed by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, in Staten Island, New York City, founded in 1921. Named for the same saint, the Bronx parish of St. Rita of Cascia was established in 1900.
The issue was an alley separating St. Rita Church and its Catholic school from the planned project. The diocese claimed that the project was unlawfully removing access to the church and school through the alley. [25] After the developer and the diocese reached a compromise solution, the lawsuit was dismissed in November 2022. [26]
The rose is thought to represent God's love for Rita and Rita's ability to intercede on behalf of lost causes or impossible cases. Rita is often depicted holding roses or with roses nearby, and on her feast day, the churches and shrines of Saint Rita provide roses to the congregation that are blessed by priests during Mass.
