"The Pill", written by Lorene Allen, Don McHan, T. D. Bayless, and Loretta Lynn, is a comic-tinged song about birth control. The song tells a story of a wife who is upset about her husband getting her pregnant year after year, but is now happy because she can control her own reproductive choices because she has "the pill" (which had been introduced in 1960).
The album peaked at No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot Country LPs chart and No. 182 on the Billboard Top LP's and Tape chart.. The album's only single, "The Pill", was released in January 1975 [5] and peaked at No. 5 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and No. 70 on the US Billboard Hot 100, despite being banned by a number of radio stations.
The song was the first of many controversial songs sung by Lynn, which also included 1972's "Rated X" and 1975's "The Pill". The song was considered very controversial for the time, but was ultimately quite popular. An album of the same name was released following the song's success, which also rose to the top of the charts.
While the 1975 ode to birth control is considered a pillar of country music, it remains all but absent on classic country radio.
The same year, "One's on the Way" became Lynn's fifth number one single, later followed by "Rated "X"" (1972), "Love Is the Foundation" (1973), and "Trouble in Paradise" (1974). [2] "The Pill" (1975) reached number five on the country songs chart and was her highest-charting solo single on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number seventy.
Lynn continued to reach the Top 10 until the end of the decade, including 1975's "The Pill", one of the first songs to discuss birth control. Many of Lynn's songs were autobiographical, and as a songwriter, Lynn felt no topic was off limits, as long as it was relatable to women. [ 28 ]
