Metamucil is a fiber supplement. Introduced in 1934 by G. D. Searle & Company (now G.D. Searle, LLC ), Metamucil was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 1985. The name is a combination of the Greek word for change ( meta ) and the class of fiber that it utilizes ( mucilage ).
In 1890, John Wanamaker built a warehouse at Broad and Carpenter to hold his goods, and ten years later he commissioned the monumental six-story factory at Broad and Washington that obliterated the earlier buildings. Five years earlier Caleb Milne built the largest of all, a 376 foot long factory that stretched from 10th to 11th Streets.
Metamucil was introduced by G. D. Searle & Company in 1934 and its name is a combination of the Greek word for change (meta), with the class of fiber it utilizes (mucilage). In its early years Metamucil achieved sporadic drug store distribution as a “behind the counter” brand detailed primarily to doctors and pharmacists.
