His legacy includes Gardiners Island, which remains in the possession of the family and is the largest privately owned island in the United States. Brainard was tutored at home by an elder brother and entered Yale College at the age of 15 in 1811. Biographies agree that he was not an attentive student, and it is uncertain whether he graduated.
