At the time, Austin was part of the Diocese of Galveston. St. Mary's was finished in 1874 and dedicated in 1884. St. Patrick's was demolished around 1874. When the Diocese of Austin was created in 1948, St. Mary's became the cathedral of the newly formed diocese.

In 2008, St Mary's Cathedral became the focus of World Youth Day 2008 and was visited by Pope Benedict XVI who consecrated the new forward altar. The cathedral was designed by William Wardell and built from 1866 to 1928. It is also known as St Mary's Catholic Cathedral and Chapter House, Saint Mary's Cathedral and St Mary's Cathedral.
St. Mary's Feast which celebrates the birth of Mother Mary is the most important festival celebrated in the basilica and is attended by 500,000 people. [ clarification needed ] Held in the month of September, the festivities go on for 10 days culminating in a grand chariot procession on the last day. [ 6 ]
The term "Old" was added to the name of this church in 1904 after St. Mary's in Hyde Park (Cincinnati) was founded. [3] In 1929, a second organ, from the Austin Organs was donated to the church. [6] The three buildings of the Old St. Mary's parish complex were listed together on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. [1]
