The village is located directly west of the mesa, with two small mesas, known as the Pilot Knobs, to its west. Wagon Mound is readily visible from the Rabbit Ears, the major landmark further east on the trail. [4] Wagon Mound was an important landmark on the Cimarron Cutoff branch of the Santa Fe Trail for several reasons.
A mowed strip of land, called a companion trail, 19 miles (31 km) long, runs alongside the Santa Fe Trail. Point of Rocks is a cliff in Morton County, Kansas [1] which was one of three landmarks by the same name on the Santa Fe Trail. This one was on the Cimarron Cutoff. It is now part of Cimarron National Grassland. The bluff overlooks the north side of the Cimarron River and lies approximately seven miles north of Elkhart west of K-27. [2]
The Cold Spring and Inscription Rock Historic District is a 2-acre (0.81 ha) historic district in Cimarron County, Oklahoma, near Boise City, Oklahoma that was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1994. It is associated with NPS Master Plan #122.

Rayado is located where the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail intersects with the Cimarron Trail to Fort Leavenworth. [3] Rayado is at 6,509 feet (1,984 m), along State Route 21 at the extreme southeast corner of Philmont Scout Ranch. One mile to the south is a classic southwestern butte, [4] called Kit Carson Mesa.
The park is popular for trout fishing in the Cimarron River and its tributaries, Clear Creek and Tolby Creek. [1] Stocked trout include rainbow and brown. The river is maintained by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish at a trout density of approximately 3,000 fish per mile, although water flow can vary between 2 and 50 cfs.[2]
