Michigan (/ ˈ m ɪ ʃ ɪ ɡ ən / ⓘ MISH-ig-ən) is a state in the Great Lakes region of the Upper Midwest region of the United States.It borders Wisconsin to the southwest in the Upper Peninsula, and Indiana and Ohio to the south in the Lower Peninsula; it is also connected by Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie to Minnesota and Illinois, and the Canadian province of Ontario.
Rosa Parks Day was created by the Michigan State Legislature and first celebrated in 1998. [1] The California State Legislature followed suit in 2000. [2] The holiday was first designated in the U.S. state of Ohio championed by Joyce Beatty, advocate who helped Ohio's legislation pass to honor the late leader. [3]
1855 Michigan State University was founded as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, becoming the first land grant university in the United States. 1861-1865 Michigan sent 90,000 men, nearly a quarter of the state's male population, to fight in state regiments in the Civil War. 1871 Fires burned Manistee and Holland.
