The Smoke-Free Illinois Act (410 ILCS 82; Public Act 095-0017) is a comprehensive anti-smoking law that took effect in Illinois on January 1, 2008 ().It bans smoking inside most buildings and vehicles used by the general public, used as a place of employment, or owned by the government or another public body.
The restrictions include all commercial entities such as lavatories, office buildings, gyms, cafés, restaurants, discos, pubs and bars, and it is illegal for the owners of such places to put ashtrays anywhere inside enclosed spaces. Also, owners of public places must display "no smoking" signs and prevent visitors from smoking.

It had previously banned smoking on commercial domestic flights in Canada and international flights of less than six hours, which obviously did not cover the Japan route.
The primary goal of the bill was to prohibit smoking in indoor public places and workplaces to benefit the public interest. [7] The Smoke-Free Air Act stated that separate sections for smoking and nonsmoking sections in workplaces and indoor public areas were not eliminating the health hazard to nonsmokers and banning smoking altogether in these areas was a necessary solution to this problem.
