O What a Savior" is a Southern gospel song written by the Free Will Baptist musician Marvin P. Dalton in 1948. The first line is "Once I was straying in sin's dark valley" and the chorus starts "O what a Savior". It was first recorded in January 1950 by the Original Stamps Quartet, a male-voice quartet, accompanied by piano. [1]
The group's roots go back to 1971, [3] when Joe and Lily Isaacs began a bluegrass band. Lily's parents are Polish Jewish Holocaust survivors. A few years after they were liberated from a concentration camp in Germany in 1945, her parents moved two year old Lily to New York City, where, in 1958, she got a recording contract with Columbia Records and started performing in night clubs.
In 1968 she was named "Billboard Magazines Female Country Songwriter of the Year" for the hit song, "Baby's Back Again" performed by Connie Smith and "Hello Love" performed by Hank Snow. [9] Most recently, Robinson was honored by the Artists Music Guild with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award on November 10, 2012.
He is most well known for his involvement in songs such as "Oh What A Savior," "Hide Thou Me," and "There's Room at the Cross.” He appeared on several of the Bill Gaither Homecoming Reunion concerts. [3] He died February 28, 1995, in Trussville, Alabama. He was 66 years old. He was inducted into Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1999. [1]

He went on to play gospel music with the Northside Quartet and later on achieved some success and a Grammy nomination with the Victory Trio, based out of his hometown, Morristown, Tennessee.
