The Blackfeet Indian Reservation is located east of Glacier National Park and borders the Canadian province of Alberta. Cut Bank Creek and Birch Creek form part of its eastern and southern borders. The reservation contains 3,000 square miles (7,800 km 2), twice the size of the national park and larger than the state of Delaware.
Prior to the construction of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, these trails were the primary form of circulation within the park. The trail system includes a number of bridges. [2] The three separate trail systems link Many Glacier, Two Medicine, Cut Bank, Saint Mary and Goathaunt ranger stations and visitor centers.
The glacier is situated in a cirque on the southeast slope of Piegan Mountain and just below the summit at an elevation between 8,800 and 8,200 ft (2,700 and 2,500 m) above sea level. [3] The glacier covered an area of approximately 62 acres (0.25 km 2) in 2005, a 10 percent reduction in its surface area since 1966. [2]
