Jackson County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census , the population was 27,791. [ 1 ] Its county seat is Ripley , [ 2 ] and its largest municipality is Ravenswood .
The Western District occupies the southwestern portion of Jackson County. To the north and east, it is bounded by the Northern District of Jackson County, to the east and south by the Eastern District, to the south by Buffalo-Union District in Putnam County, to the southwest by Union and Cologne Districts in Mason County, and to the north and west by the Ohio River.
In 1832, the Starchers donated 8 acres (32,000 m 2) of land to the county, 2 acres (8,100 m 2) for the location of the county courthouse and jail, and six for the general use of the new county (a public school and a cemetery were later located on the land). The town was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1832.
