Core i7, on the desktop platform no longer supports hyper-threading; instead, now higher-performing core i9s will support hyper-threading on both mobile and desktop platforms. Before 2007 and post-Kaby Lake, some Intel Pentium and Intel Atom (e.g. N270, N450) processors support hyper-threading. Celeron processors never supported it.
With Sapphire Rapids-WS workstation processors that launched in March 2023, Intel introduced tiers within Xeon W. Xeon w3, w5, w7 and w9 was designed to emulate the Core i3, i5, i7 and i9 branding that Intel had been using for its desktop processors.
List of Intel Xeon processors.
In each generation, the highest-performing Core i7 processors use the same socket and QPI-based architecture as the medium-end Xeon processors of that generation, while lower-performing Core i7 processors use the same socket and PCIe/DMI/FDI architecture as the Core i5. "Core i7" is a successor to the Intel Core 2 brand.
The chipsets contain a 'memory controller hub' and an 'I/O controller hub', which tend to be called 'north bridge' and 'south bridge' respectively. The memory controller hub connects to the processors, memory, high-speed I/O such as PCI Express, and to the I/O controller hub by a proprietary link.
Support for up to 12 DIMMs of DDR4 memory per CPU socket; Xeon Platinum supports up to eight sockets; Xeon Gold supports up to four sockets; Xeon Silver and Bronze support up to two sockets; No suffix letter: up to 1.0TB DDR4 per socket-L: Large DDR memory tier support (up to 4.5TB)-M: Medium DDR memory tier support (up to 2.0TB)
There are five different families of Xeon processors that were based on Sandy Bridge architecture: Sandy Bridge-E targeted high-end desktop (HEDT) enthusiast segment. It was branded as Core i7 Extreme Edition and Core i7 processors, despite sharing many similarities with Xeon models.
As a significant new feature, the X99 enthusiast platform as a whole was the first to support DDR4 memory. Thanks to the features of integrated memory controllers (IMCs) of supported processors, the X99 platform also supports dual-and quad-channel memory layouts, with optional support for registered ECC memory.
