The National Archaeological Museum of Metaponto (Italian: Museo archeologico nazionale di Metaponto) is a museum housing the archaeological finds from the Greek city of Metapontum, now Metaponto, Basilicata, Italy. As of 2021, there were another 12 similar structures identified in the region, of which only two, Cancho Roano (Zalamea de la Serena) and La Mata had been excavated. The old seat of the Museum, now used as a warehouse for archaeological finds (AltinoLab) At the end of the 1950s the construction of the museum began, based on a project by the architect Ferdinando Forlati, [1] to collect the finds found at the end of the 19th century during agricultural work and during the first excavations of 1936-1937.
Another discovery was a treasure of silver coins from the reigns of Philip III of Macedon and Alexander the Great. [6] The subsequent directors of the Polish expeditions were Prof. Wiktor Andrzej Daszewski (1971–2007) and Dr. Henryk Meyza (2008–2019). [4] Their teams gradually uncovered an enormous antique residence (120 m long and 80 m wide).
