It is one of the 20 operational AIIMS in India. It is one of the four "Phase-IV" All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) announced in July 2014. [2]
The foundation stone of AIIMS Delhi was laid in 1952. [2] The first AIIMS was established in 1956 under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956. [3] Originally proposed to be established in Calcutta, it was established in New Delhi following the refusal of Chief Minister of West Bengal Bidhan Chandra Roy. [4]

Till establishment of AIIMS Gorakhpur, BRD Medical College was the only tertiary referral hospital in a 300 km 2 area around Gorakhpur, serving patients from 15 surrounding districts.
