The official doctrine of the LDS Church includes the existence of "heavenly parents", which is generally understood to refer to the goddess Heavenly Mother, who exists alongside God the Father and is his wife. [7] [36] God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are recognized as the three constituent entities of the Godhead. [37]
The first-born spirit child of God the Father was Jehovah, whom Latter-day Saints identify as the premortal Jesus. [1]: 43–44 [28] [29] [30] Jehovah was a God [31] and was like God the Father in attributes, [32] but he did not have an immortal physical body like God the Father until his resurrection. [33]
After he lived a mortal life, Mormons believe that the Father died, was resurrected, and achieved his godhood [73] along with at least one wife whom Mormons refer to as the Heavenly Mother. [74] Some believe that the Heavenly Father and Mother gave birth to the spirits of humanity through a sexual union. [75]
Members of the LDS Church are encouraged to prepare to be celestially married in a temple. [18] It is believed, therefore, that all humans are spirit children of "heavenly parents" [1] who as mortals were celestially married and went on to become exalted. This married couple is known to Latter-day Saints as God the Father and Heavenly Mother.
