GM "G80" Gov-Lock diff modification. I've searched a couple places but haven't found much information on the actual workings of the Gov-lock diff. Here's what I was thinking - the way I understand things - the diff operates based upon the differential speed between the two side gears that drive the axles - when it senses about a 100 RPM ...

If it is a full floater and the gears are OK and just the governor and flyweights are grenaded, clean as stated above.
Govlocks are garbage and since you are only running 4:10 gears you can find a used carrier pretty easily on EBay and even here on Pirate 4:10 and down carriers pretty common. The gov lock will explode in offroad use especially rock crawling. If it was me I would find a used carrier and put either a detroit locker or a Grizzly locker in it.
Bout to rebuild and re-gear my 14 bolt to throw under my Cj-8. Was wondering what locker anyone would rec. for the 14 bolt. I was leaning toward just a full spool or a lock right , but was not sure. I will be gearing the rig at 4.56 and it will be driven on and off the road. Wanted the best for the money and functionality for what I'm doing.
The sleeve drags the bolt around and if the nut is stuck or wedged or tight it can loosen up the bolt. This also applys to spring and shackle bolts on a leaf spring rig and steering components on a rig with rod ends insteas of TREs. Cotter pins wil hold 130lbs torque if the correct pin is used for the aplication.
The 14bolt is found in a huge number of GM 4x4 pickup trucks and vans, 3/4 and 1 ton, from the 70s right through until at least 2000. You can find it in: 73-96 C20, C2573-00 C30, C3573-00 G30, G3573-00 K20, K2573-00 K30, K3584-88 CUCV. 88-91.5 V30. As well as a whole lot more cab and chasis trucks, delivery vans, etc.

Here my 14 bolt gov loc looked like after it start poping and banging, its was used for a tow rig under my 68 chevy towing a 2 axle trailer and a samurai. It worked like a locker on the way home once on of the pieces of spider gears got jammed in . Sami.
The gov-bomb is not really worth rebuilding, if it's shot (or in pieces, usually) replace it with a good LSD or Locker. I've got the GM FSM for the gov-bomb. I'll scan for you. I need to resize them, though. 1965 Scout 80 7.3PSD/ZF/203/205 D60F/14BFF. Member: 4 Jackstand Wheeler's Association.
