Janice Schakowsky (/ ʃ ə ˈ k aʊ s k i / shə-KOW-skee; née Danoff; born May 26, 1944) is an American politician who has served as the U.S. representative from Illinois's 9th congressional district since 1999, and previous served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives (1991–1998). She is a member of the Democratic Party.
Democrat Jan Schakowsky has represented the district since January 1999. The district is one of the most reliably Democratic districts in Chicago, and in all of Illinois. It has been in Democratic hands without interruption since 1949, and for all but six years since 1935.
