Elkhorn is a western neighborhood of the city of Omaha, Nebraska, United States. The population was 6,062 at the 2000 census and was estimated by the Census Bureau at 8,192 in 2005 before it was annexed into Omaha in 2007.
The Lincoln Highway in Omaha, Nebraska, runs east–west from near North 183rd Street and West Dodge Road in Omaha, Nebraska, towards North 192nd Street outside of Elkhorn. This section of the Lincoln Highway , one of only 20 miles (32 km) that were paved with brick in Nebraska, [ 2 ] is one of the most well-preserved in the country. [ 3 ]

US-6/N-31 meet US-275 and N-92 near the Elkhorn neighborhood of Omaha, and they separate in Elkhorn itself at a freeway interchange which also has Nebraska Link 28B, a connector to US-275. [1] [2] At this point, US-6 goes onto the freeway, the West Dodge Expressway, and turns due east to go toward Downtown Omaha.
Elkhorn takes its name from the Elkhorn River and was incorporated by an act of the territorial legislature in 1889. It was annexed by Omaha on March 8, 2005 after a two-year court battle. [3] Elkhorn became part of Omaha on March 1, 2007. The original town site is near 204th St. and West Maple Road in West Omaha.
It is the state's most populous county, home to just under 30% of Nebraska's residents. Its county seat is Omaha , [ 1 ] the state's most populous city . The county was established in 1854 and named after Stephen A. Douglas (1813–1861), who was then serving as a U.S. senator from Illinois .
It crosses the Elkhorn River and then meets Skyline Drive, in Elkhorn, at a partial cloverleaf interchange. Now in Omaha, the road is named West Dodge Road. L-28B ends at an interchange with westbound U.S. Route 6 and Nebraska Highway 31. West Dodge Road continues towards Downtown Omaha as eastbound US 6.
The Elkhorn, a 290-mile-long (470 km) [9] river, originates in the eastern Sandhills of Nebraska and is one of the largest tributaries of the Platte River. The Elkhorn joins the Platte on its south-bound path just southwest of Omaha, approximately 1 mile (2 km) south and 3 miles (5 km) west of Gretna.
