When Mar del Plata was declared a city in 1907 the resort was called the "Biarritz of Argentina". In 1913 the French rambla was opened, with ceramic pavements from Belgium, balustrades and Greco-Roman statues. In the late 1920s wealthy families began to build chalets and mansions near the Hotel Bristol, and spent their days at the beach.
The hotel was extensively renovated in 2003 which included the addition of a spa. In 2006, the hotel was renamed Sheraton Iguazú Resort. The hotel was sold to a UAE-based investment group in August 2017 for $55 million. [2] It left Sheraton on September 29, 2017 and joined Meliá Hotels International as the Hotel Meliá Iguazú.
