As part of our mission to promote productive and sustainable fisheries, and as directed by the Magnuson-Stevens Act, we work to sustain commercial fishing in U.S. federal waters by studying fisheries and providing guidance and support to regional fishery management councils. We gather and compile data and information into three key annual reports:
Fishery management plans must comply with a number of requirements, including 10 National Standards—principles that promote sustainable fisheries management. These National Standards address everything from preventing overfishing while achieving optimum yield in fisheries, to reducing bycatch, to ensuring safety at sea.

Ecosystem-based fisheries management is a holistic way of managing fisheries and marine resources by taking into account the entire ecosystem of the species being managed. The goal of ecosystem-based management is to maintain ecosystems in a healthy, productive, and resilient condition so they can provide the services humans want and need.

The National Standards are principles that must be followed in any fishery management plan to ensure sustainable and responsible fishery management. As mandated by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, NOAA Fisheries has developed guidelines for each National Standard. When reviewing fishery management plans, plan ...
Even though management is largely addressed on a single-species basis, NOAA Fisheries adopted ecosystem-based fisheries management within its mission to guide the agency and its partners– regional fishery management councils, states, tribes, indigenous communities, and organizations–to meet sustainable fishery management goals under ...
The Sustainable Fisheries Act of 1996 enacted numerous science, management, and conservation mandates. It recognized the importance of healthy habitat for commercial and recreational fisheries. Fish and other marine species depend on their habitat to survive and reproduce.
These standards aim to prevent overfishing, protect other species and habitat, and minimize bycatch on non-target species. They ensure sustainable and responsible fishery management in the United States. Learn more about the National Standards. 3. Managing wild fish populations sustainably and keeping fishermen on the job is a dynamic process.
