In 1970, 10 years after moving to Hydra, Merrick published his second successful novel and his best-known book, The Lord Won't Mind. The story's protagonists, Charlie Mills and Peter Martin, both young, handsome, and well-endowed, fall madly in love. The book follows Charlie's path from a closeted gay man to a person who accepts himself.
The book (and Edward Skidelsky's writing generally [2]) looks into the idea of the good life and how capitalism may have been the key to it, but we have now lost sense of the good life as a priority. The solutions offered to this problem are to "curb insatiability" and to consider a form of basic income for society.
"It's a Good Life" is a short story by American writer Jerome Bixby, written in 1953. In 1970, the Science Fiction Writers of America selected it for The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume One , as one of the 20 best short stories in science fiction published prior to the Nebula Award .
