Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan, and formerly its capital, derives its name from the Kazakh word alma 'apple', and it is often explained as meaning 'full of apples' (the region surrounding Almaty is home to forests of Malus sieversii).

The Green Bazar (Kazakh: Көк базар, romanized: Kök bazar; Russian: Зелёный базар, romanized: Zelyony bazar) is a public market in Almaty, Kazakhstan (on the crossroad between Zenkov and Jibek Joly streets). [1] [2] Since its inauguration in 1875, the market has been an important trading point in Almaty. [3]
The Almaty Tower or Kök Töbe Tower, the city's television tower, is located on the south-eastern slope of the hill. [2] It was built during 1975 and 1983, and if measured from sea level, this tower is one of the highest in the world – 372 meters tall. It has a couple observation platforms, but they are not open to the public.

Almaty Region (Kazakh: Almaty oblysy [ɑɫmɑˈtə ˌwobɫɤˈsə]), formerly known as the Alma-Ata Region until 1993, is a region in Kazakhstan, located in the southeastern part of the country. Its capital, from 1997 to 2022 was the city of Taldyqorğan .
The district formed on 14 September 1936 as Stalin District by the decision of the Alma-Ata City Council of People's Deputies. On 10 March 1957, the district was renamed into the Soviet District which eventually became Almaly District on 12 December 1995. [4] The district is located in the very center of the city.
