The Nkomati mine is a large mine in the north-east of South Africa near Machadodorp in Mpumalanga. Nkomati represents one of the largest nickel reserves in South Africa having estimated reserves of 408.6 million tonnes of ore grading 0.33% nickel. [1] The 408.6 million tonnes of ore contains 1.35 million tonnes of nickel metal. [1]
After a plunge in nickel prices, in 2008 BNC began operating on "care and maintenance," i.e. sans production. [7] At the time of its shutdown, it was the only integrated nickel miner, smelter and refinery in Africa. The cost of resuming the Trojan mine was estimated at $50 million, and the Bindura complex at $150 million.
In December 2008 Samancor Nickel was granted a 3-year mining exploration permit on the perimeters of Musongati, Waga, and Nyabikere. Kermas financed all the costs of exploration and obtaining the permit to exploit the deposit. The Koniambo mine is a large open pit mine of the laterite variety in the north of New Caledonia in the North Province. [2] It is closest to the small town of Voh , on the west coast of the island. Nickel is found in saprolite ore on the Koniambo Massif , [ 2 ] and taken by conveyor to a new smelter on the coast.
The Nkamouna enriched cobalt-nickel-manganese-iron laterite deposits and several other nickeliferous laterite deposits in southeast Cameroon were first discovered and investigated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) during 1981–1986, in a cooperative project with the Cameroon Ministry of Mines, Water and Energy to evaluate ...
