War Memorial Coliseum was known foremost as the home of the NBA's Fort Wayne Pistons for five seasons (1952–57) as well as the 1953 NBA All-Star Game and 1955 and 1956 NBA Finals. After the Pistons moved to Detroit in 1957, the facility continued to host at least one of their games every season from the 1958–59 to 1966–67 campaigns.
Originally called the Fort Wayne City Series, the name was changed to the Summit Athletic Conference in 1973, when Harding High School joined. [ 1 ] Elmhurst High School closed at the end of the 2009-10 academic year, with students being spread out between North Side , South Side , and Wayne high schools. [ 2 ]
In 2014, IPFW reach their first Summit League tournament championship before losing to North Dakota State. Beginning in 2016, the school rebranded itself from IPFW to Fort Wayne to build a stronger tie to the Fort Wayne community. [3] The transition only affected the athletic department's branding efforts.
Currently, all 9 men's basketball teams [1] [2] in the Summit League receive a berth in the conference tournament (barring NCAA sanctions). Before the 2022-23 season, only the top 8 conference teams (by conference record) made the tournament. After the 16-game conference season, teams are seeded by conference record with the following tie-breakers:
