Moray eel. Moray eels, or Muraenidae (/ ˈ m ɒr eɪ, m ə ˈ r eɪ /), are a family of eels whose members are found worldwide. There are approximately 200 species in 15 genera which are almost exclusively marine, but several species are regularly seen in brackish water, and a few are found in fresh water.
The fangtooth moray is distinctive for its bright yellow head with elongated jaws, which are filled with a large number of long "glasslike" teeth. The body is moderate to dark brown in color with pale spots on the body and fins. The dorsal and anal fins are fused with the caudal and covered with thick skin.
As the name suggests, the giant moray is a large eel, reaching up to a little over 3m (10 feet) in length and 30 kg (66 lb) in weight. [3] Its elongated body is brownish in color. While juveniles are tan in color with large black spots, adults have black specks that grade into leopard-like spots behind the head. [4]
