The Free City of Danzig (German: Freie Stadt Danzig; Polish: Wolne Miasto Gdańsk) was a city-state under the protection and oversight of the League of Nations between 1920 and 1939, consisting of the Baltic Sea port of Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland) and nearly 200 other small localities in the surrounding areas. The similarly-named Free City of Danzig, this one established in 1920, used another near-identical design for its flag. [1] While under the control of Nazi Germany during World War II, the use of the city flag in Gdańsk was discontinued. [1] After the war, the Polish People's Republic did not restore use of the flag.
