Irving ISD was one of approximately 43 school districts out of over 1200 in Texas to receive the rating in 2010. During the 2011 school year, Irving was one of only 23 school districts out of over 1200 to repeat the 5-star rating. In 2015, Irving ISD was one of two winners of the national AP District of the Year by College Board.

Barbara Bush Middle School (Irving) A school named after former first lady "Barbara Bush". Vivian Field Middle School (Farmers Branch) The school colors are blue and grey, and the mascot is a Viking. The school opened as a junior high school in 1959. In the early 1990s the school was expanded and the sixth grade was added.
Arlington High School was the district's sole white high school until Sam Houston High School opened in 1963. The district desegregated in 1965. Lamar High School, the third high school, opened in 1970. Bowie High School served as the district's fourth high school, [7] opening in 1973. [8]
