The restaurant was founded by Leon Finney Sr., originally of Mississippi, in 1940. [1] It was one of the earliest barbecue establishments in Chicago. Along with other restaurants like Lem's Bar-B-Q, Leon's popularized the "Delta style" of barbecue that predominates in the South Side.
The restaurant is known for its Beijing Duck Feast, a three-course dinner with Peking duck carved tableside and served with gua bao, sauce, and garnishes. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ] After serving the duck, the carcass is returned to the kitchen to be turned into duck fried rice or duck noodles, and then duck soup, the next courses.
As of 1988, it had two additional locations in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and Rolling Meadows, Illinois. [5] It originally had a limited menu including hamburgers, ribs, barbecue chicken and sandwiches. The restaurant was established before the proliferation of smoked, South Side-style barbecue. Smoked meats were eventually added to the menu in 2011. [4]
The restaurant has been called a "barbecue icon" in the United States by Eater and a "civic treasure" in Chicago by the Chicago Reader. [2] [7] It was named one of Eater's "essential barbecue restaurants in Chicago" in 2019. [2] Lem's has also been named one of the top barbecue restaurants in the country by Time Out and Zagat. [4]
In 2018, City Barbeque was named to QSR ' s 40/40 list; [24] in 2017, it held the #48 spot on Restaurant Business ' s Future 50. [25] 2023 brought a win in the Nation’s Restaurant News Barbeque Showdown when City Barbeque was voted the winner by readers in a competition featuring top barbecue brands across the nation. [26]

The restaurant was known for serving Chicago-style barbecue, including rib tips and hot links cooked in an aquarium smoker, [6] using hickory and oak wood. [7] They began experimenting with the use of the aquarium smoker, a Chicago invention, in the 1960s with help from Leon Finney Sr. [4] It also served barbecue chicken, turkey links and ribs. [5]
