A post office called Gutman was established in 1884, and remained in operation until 1905. [2] The community was named for the local Gutman family, who kept a store there.
Originally part of Allen County, the township was formed in 1836. [6] The township was also involved in one of the last county border changes in Ohio. This change occurred in 1888 when part of Stokes Township in Logan County was exchanged to Clay Township for part of Goshen Township.
