The main courthouse building was built in 1937 in Moderne architecture style. It served historically as a courthouse, as a post office, and as a government office building. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. [1] By the late 1980s, the federal courts needed more space to effectively serve the public.

Construction began on the Essex County Family Courthouse in March 2023. The new 267,000-square-foot (24,800 m 2) building is located at Branford Place between Washington Street and University Avenue. There will be 22 courtrooms, 19 for Family Court and three children-in-court courtrooms.
