St. John's-Ravenscourt School (commonly referred to as SJR) is an independent, co-educational, university-preparatory school founded in 1820. Located in Winnipeg , Manitoba , the school delivers an enriched curriculum from Kindergarten through Grade 12.
[5] [6] At that time, it was a grades 9-12 school and girls wanting to attend university would transfer to St. John's College for grade 13. It was decided that St. John's College would absorb Providence College and move to the latter's newer Paris Road campus. The merger was finalised by the 1970-71 academic year. [4]
With a strong Anglican affiliation, [4] St John's College was officially opened by the newly arrived Bishop Robert Machray on 1 November 1866. [5] [6] [7] The roots of the college, however, lie in the early years of the Red River Colony, where it served as a school for the settlers.
Beginning with the law school in 1925, St. John's began establishing other graduate and undergraduate schools, and became a university in 1933. In April 1936, St. John's bought the Hillcrest Golf Club's 100 acres (40 ha) of land for about $500,000, with the intention of eventually moving the school to the new site. [15]
