They were widely used as textbooks in American schools from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, and are still used today in some private schools and homeschooling.
William Holmes McGuffey (September 23, 1800 – May 4, 1873) was an American college professor and president who is best known for writing the McGuffey Readers, the first widely used series of elementary school-level textbooks.

Alexander McGuffey was born on November 22, 1767, in Wigtownshire in the southwestern corner of Scotland. [1] His parents were Ann McKittrick and William McGuffey.
