Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man: The Battle of the Century is a comic book jointly published by Marvel Comics and DC Comics in March 1976. It was the second co-publishing effort between DC Comics and Marvel Comics following their collaboration on MGM's Marvelous Wizard of Oz, and the first modern superhero intercompany crossover.
The Amazing Spider-Man #31: "If This Be My Destiny...!" begins with Spider-Man fighting masked men armed with knock-out gas, working for the anonymous Master Planner as they get away with a stolen nuclear device and escape into the ocean. The next day, Aunt May falls over and is hospitalized with an unknown illness.
Jennifer Bisset of CNET praised the action sequences, performances, and story, writing: "A Russo Brothers influence can almost be felt ushering Holland's third Spider-Man movie into new, weightier territory. If the character is to become the next Tony Stark, this is the way to etch a few more scars into a more interesting hero's facade.
