Picture dictionaries are often organized by topic instead of being an alphabetic list of words, and almost always include only a small corpus of words. A similar but distinct concept is the visual dictionary, [1] which is composed of a series of large, labelled images, allowing the user to find the name of a specific component of a larger object.
The definition of success in a given cloze test varies, depending on the broader goals behind the exercise. Assessment may depend on whether the exercise is objective (i.e. students are given a list of words to use in a cloze) or subjective (i.e. students are to fill in a cloze with words that would make a given sentence grammatically correct).
Secondary to teaching language skills, the exercise of dictation has also been used to introduce students to literary works, and to instill morals. [1] Dictation has also been used in an attempt to capture endangered or dying languages, as in the case of Victoria Howard, a Chinook speaker who dictated songs and stories to Melville Jacobs. [2]

Inch by Inch is a 1960 picture book written and illustrated by Leo Lionni. The book tells the story of an inchworm who likes to measure everything. The book was a recipient of a 1961 Caldecott Honor for its illustrations. [1] The original version of Inch by Inch had no page numbers. [2]
Dictation – the teacher chooses a grade-appropriate passage and reads it aloud. Reading aloud – the students take turns reading sections of a passage, play or a dialogue aloud. Student self-correction – when a student makes a mistake the teacher offers him/her a second chance by giving a choice.
