The site known as Camp Hero, or the Montauk Air Force Station, was initially commissioned by the U.S. Army in 1942. Camp Hero was initially a coastal defense station disguised as a fishing village, and its location was chosen to prevent a potential invasion of New York from the sea.

The agency's portfolio also includes 28 golf courses, 35 swimming pools, 67 beaches, and 18 museums and nature centers. Montauk Point State Park is a 862-acre (3.49 km 2) state park [2] located in the hamlet of Montauk, at the eastern tip of Long Island in the Town of East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York. Montauk Point is the easternmost extremity of the South Fork of Long Island, and thus also of New York State.
After World War II, the lake became a well-known commercial and sports fishing area, and became New York's largest fishing port. [4]In the 1970s, a proposal was made to dam the sound and build a canal through the former Montaukett Indian Field and Big Reed Pond for a new outlet.
The nearby hamlet of Montauk is accessible from the park via the Montauk Highway and the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Suffolk Transit's 10C route also serves the beach connecting it with East Hampton and Montauk, and the Amagansett, East Hampton and Montauk Long Island Rail Road stations on the Montauk Branch.
Montauk Highway is an east–west road extending for 95 miles (153 km) across the southern shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, New York, in the United States.It extends from the Amityville/Copiague village/hamlet line in Amityville, where it continues as Merrick Road, to Montauk Point State Park at the very eastern end of Long Island in Montauk.
Lake Hemet has a surface area of 470 acres (190 ha) [2] and 12 miles (19 km) of shoreline. Fishing is the primary attraction to the lake, which is stocked with rainbow trout, channel catfish, bluegill and largemouth bass. Other Lake Hemet activities include boating, picnicking, hiking, and camping in the surrounding areas.
