This is a list of city and town halls in the Republic of Ireland. The Galway city branch of the Atlantic Technological University (formerly GMIT until April 2022) is located at the southern end of the suburb, next to the Old Dublin Road. Owing to its proximity, many students live in the Ballybane area, and student residences have been built to cater for them, such as at Glasán Student Village. [14]
It is just across the river from the Spanish Arch, which was the location of regular fish markets where the locals supplied the city with seafood as recently as the end of the 19th century. The original village of thatched cottages was razed in the 1930s and replaced by a council-housing scheme.

The original municipal building in the city was the Tholsel which was built about 1639. [1] This was replaced by Galway Town Hall in Courthouse Square which was completed in 1825. [2] After it was reformed in 1937, Galway Corporation was mostly based at offices in Dominick Street and Fishmarket. [3]
